Abstract: Ulysses, a masterpiece by James Joyce, mainly portrays three characters' (Stephen, Bloom, Molly) eighteen hours' experience in the city of Dublin in the words of stream of consciousness. This paper attempts to discuss the features which make an enormous part in the writings of stream of consciousness by analyzing many fresh examples in the masterpiece. From psychological perspective, this paper not only analyses the features of the application of stream of consciousness, but also explores the inner world of these characters through these unique approaches of narration. It concludes that there are four main features in the work of the stream of consciousness which are leaping on timespace, montage, interior monologue and free association. This conclusion is all based on the detailed analysis of the meticulously selected material from Ulysses. On this basis, it reveals both the features of stream of consciousness in Ulysses and the connection to the development of the exploration of their inner world by this unique writing technique, and provides a special approach to the research of this kind of fiction.

Introduction
Ulysses may not be the greatest novel in the world, but it is definitely the most outstanding piece in the field of fiction of stream of consciousness. As a work of renovation in style, it shocked the public in two unconventional approaches. The first one is its paralleled structure with the ancient epic Odyssey. Joyce, the author, compared Odysseus’ ten years of wandering aboard to Bloom’s a day in Dublin. In turns, the son of Odysseus is paralleled to Stephen who is a young man indulged in philosophy and a lonely one searching for a special father. Penelope, the loyal wife of Odysseus is the anti-version of Molly who is having an affair with another man. James Joyce, the creator of this masterpiece, narrowed down the time period to one day as come to the parallelism of time.
The second approach is its unique application of the style of stream of consciousness. In most places of narration, the author had not played his role as the third person story-teller. Instead of this traditional way of narration, James faded out and let the characters’ inner world exposed out in front of the readers so as to lead them to observe every single detail of the life in Dublin. Through this exposure of the inner world of characters, it’s obvious that there are some contradictions between the shows which they put on in their daily lives and the real feeling that they buried deep in their heart. These contradictions may not be strong enough to plot out the story-line because of the features of stream of consciousness. Therefore, it is apparent that the acknowledgement of the features of stream of consciousness in Ulysses is the key to the appreciation of the book.
