Abstract: The rapid development and change in technology in the last fifty years and especially the digital boom in the mid/late 90’s have tremendously changed the attitudes of teachers and students towards language teaching and learning. With the great development of computers and Internet, more and more universities are using computers in foreign language teaching and learning in China. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become a great tendency. Meanwhile, there has been a movement away from teacher-dominated modes of learning to more learner-centered approaches. Based on the introduction of CALL, this paper comes to introduce the history of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Finally, this paper introduces the roles of teachers in CALL. It will be meaningful to use and develop the new teaching method.

Introduction
With the advent of multimedia computing and internet, recently years have shown an explosion of interest in using computers for foreign language teaching and learning. As a result, the college English teaching(more than 20 years in China)is also challenged by the new technology. The purpose of college English teaching is no longer solely to develop students’ reading comprehension or listening in traditional ways, instead ,to fully perform in English teaching, especially in Computer Assisted Language Learning(CALL)is today’s main concern. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) came as an age in the early 1960s. However, it was only in 2004 that Chinese Minister of Education (MOE), for the first time, formally highlighted the role of the computer and networking in its revised College English Teaching Syllabus (CETS) which would be the guide for English teaching in mainland China [1]. According to “COLLEGE ENGLISH CURICULUM REQUIRMENTS (for trial implementations)” enacted by the ministry of education,
Colleges and universities should remold the existing teacher-centered pattern of language teaching by introducing new teaching models with the help of multimedia and network technology, so that English language teaching will be free from the constraints of time or place and geared towards students’ individualized and autonomous learning. [2]
Gu Peiya, professor of Suzhou University, in her series of study “Internet and FLT”, analyzes the origin, development and promises for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). She points out that Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) will play a more and more important role in English teaching [3]. Multimedia classroom which gets access to the Internet will be more and more beneficial to language students because with the help of multimedia, both the teacher and students can get much exposure to the authentic language environment. Some other foreign language teachers have also done considerable and valuable research work on multimedia college English teaching. They usually focus on the advancement and promotion of multimedia technology in college English teaching.
In February 2004, Chinese Minister of Education launched a teaching reform featuring the integration of the computer and networking in College English learning to stimulate students’ motivation and to improve their communicative competence. Up to now, Chinese CALL is still in infancy. The present study on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is either theoretical or practical. It is not exaggerating that overpraise is spoiling the new media, wasting our money and weakening our instruction study and research. Fortunately, a few experts and language teachers have noticed the negative effects of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). But when it comes to the concrete subject, few experts have touched the subject matter. Consequently, feasible countermeasures to existing problems in CALL are still in the cradle.
As Basnata, a western educator, pointed out in ETL (English in Teaching and Learning Magazine), “recently, in some field of foreign teaching, there exist two tendencies. One is, the position of learner is increasing, but the other is, the role of teachers are decreasing .”[4] Although learner’s position should be focused, the roles of teachers should not be ignored. We should say that the teachers are challenged now [5]. Thus, the role of computers and internet in langue instruction has now become an important issue confronting large numbers of language teachers in China. They have to skillfully master the computer assisted system.转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
