a) Establishment in accordance with the law
b) Possession of the necessary property or funds
c) Possession of its own name, organization and premises
d) Ability to independently bear civil liability
(2). An enterprise as legal person shall terminate for any of the following reasons: a) If it is dissolved by law
b) If it is disbanded
c) If it is declared bankrupt in accordance with the law
d) For other reasons
It is clear that example (1) adopts the same nominalization structures. Such parallel structures serve a purpose of achieving precision and make the English sentences more clear and understandable. However, example (2) uses the same “if” structures. The repetition of the same word enables the legal English more inclusive and elastic.
Conclusion
By conducting the thesis on precision of legal English, the author intends to point out that lerners should attach a great deal of importance to precision of legal English when doing legal document translation, especially legal C-E translation. Legal document lerners must bear in mind that precision is one of the most outstanding stylistic features and life-blood of legal English although legal English is inevitably vague to some degree. In order to achieve precision, lexical as well as syntactical devices are more often than not employed in legal English. A part from the analysis of precision of legal English from the syntactical perspective, the author also elaborates on precision in legal English lexicon, such as the use of archaisms, the use of loan words, the frequent use of reduplication of synonyms or near-synonyms, the rare use of pronouns, adjectives and adverbs. The purpose of the choice of these kinds of words is to create the effect of being formal, solemn as well as precise. As for legal English syntax, the author illustrates several typical syntactical features: the use of exact words, the use of parallel structures. Such analysis is expected to lead to a better understanding of the lexical and syntactical characteristics of legal English, which is equally important for legal C-E translation since the two languages are considerably different.
