Introduction
With the rapid growth of China’s economy and interaction with the outside world, there is a growing need among Chinese students to learn English. Particularly after the bid for World Fair, the bid for the 2008 Olympics and the success of joining the World Trade Organization, China has become one of the actors in the world's leading stage. In language learning, people’s attention has been diverted from grammar, language translation to the practical application of ability, particularly verbal capabilities. It is pointed out in the College English Curriculum Criterion that the purpose of college English teaching is to create students’ applied ability, especially listening and speaking, and enable them to communicate in English, both spoken and written, in their future work. In recent years, CET4, CET6 has also added additional oral examinations, which further explained that the speaking skills of English language are an indispensable component. But most of non-English-speaking students in high schools accepted the traditional grammar-translation education; therefore there is a huge insufficiency in their spoken English skills. All of this particularly embodied in the process of English-speaking, Chinglish pronunciation, strange intonation, because the topic they can speak in English is so deficient that they can’t practice normal day-to-day language dialogue, let alone a professional dialogue in their work situation. Too few opportunities to speak English, lead to the emergence of dumb English. Reasons are various, but the most important one is, despite the fact that spoken language teaching has attracted extensive attention, but because of many factors there still exist many problems in the process of oral English teaching, in order to smoothly conduct oral English teaching, students and teachers also need to work together.
Communication is the basic function of a language in real-life situation. Therefore, the purpose of foreign language teaching should lie in cultivating the learners’ ability to use the language practically in its oral or written form. In China, however, there exists a problem in English education that the students often remain deficient in the ability to use the language, especially in its spoken mode, the importance of which has been greatly attached by the modern society.
The orientation of people towards language learning and teaching has always been subject to social, economic and political needs. In the past few decades, due to the globalization of world economy, English has become an international language as the means for multinational and multicultural communication. Meanwhile, Chinese regard English as a necessary tool which can facilitate China’s access to modern scientific and technological advances in the countries where English is their major language. Therefore, together with our country’s open door policy, the education of English as a foreign language has been given ever-increasing importance. The boom of English learning continues unabatedly in this new century with English becoming a requirement in science, politics, trade, mess media and many other facets of life. Especially, China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization in 2001 and the successful bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games have greatly boosted the role of English. It is obvious that English, with its unique status as a worldwide language, has become an important window through which we could see the world and the world could know China at the greatest extents. Accordingly, the ability to use English language, especially to communicate in oral English, has become one of the most important living skills for many college graduates.
