

Abstract: English vocabulary is an important part of English learning. Students in the Senior Middle School have gradually realized this importance and are seeking effective ways to improve their vocabulary learning. This paper mainly focuses on the study on English vocabulary learning strategies used by the Senior Middle School students. It first deals with the general situation of English vocabulary learning and the introduction of English vocabulary learning strategies. Then based on an investigation made in Shaodong No.1 Senior Middle School, Hunan province, this paper analyzes the differences in the use of vocabulary learning strategies between the high-score group and the low-score group. It reveals that the high-score students use English vocabulary learning strategies more frequently. After that, this paper goes on to discuss the teaching of English vocabulary learning strategies. Teachers can take active measures to help and guide students to learn and use vocabulary learning strategies. Through the study, this paper aims at arousing the awareness of students and teachers alike about the importance of vocabulary learning strategies, thus bringing more benefit to English learners as well as English teachers.

摘 要:英语词汇学习是英语学习的一个重要环节。高中学生已经逐渐认识到这种重要性,正在寻找提高英语词汇学习水平的有效方法。本篇论文主要关注高中学校词汇学习策略的使用情况。首先论文介绍了英语词汇学习的一般状况以及英语词汇学习策略。然后根据在湖南省邵东县一中进行的一次调查,该论文分析了高分组和低分组学生在使用词汇学习策略上的差异。调查结果显示:高分组学生比低分组学生更常使用英语词汇学习策略。基于调查结果,论文讨论了词汇学习策略的习得。教师可以采取积极步骤去帮助和指导学生有效地学习词汇和词汇学习策略。通过调查和研究,本篇论文旨在唤醒教师和学生有关词汇学习策略的意识,为词汇学习提供一些指导,让英语学习者和老师能从中受益。

Introduction
Vocabulary is the basic building material of a language. The famous scholar Wilkins once said: "Without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” [1] McCarthy(1990), a lexicologist, held that: “No matter how well the student learns grammar, no matter how successfully he masters the sounds of a L2, without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in that language cannot happen in any meaningful way.” [2] In English learning, there is a very close relationship between word storage and English proficiency. Although more and more people have gradually realized this importance and have indeed tried their best for the enlargement of English vocabulary, the result is far from satisfaction. In view of it, since 1970s, many researchers and scholars both at home and abroad have probed deeply into this regard. With great emphasis on learning efficiency and effectiveness in particular, they put forward the concept of “language learning strategy”, which aims at enhancing the quality of learning, so as to speed up the development of education. So far, the research on language learning strategy has achieved plentiful fruits in areas of specific language learning tasks, such as reading learning strategies, listening learning strategies and so on. In this paper, we will discuss English vocabulary learning strategies, which is another English learning task. In order to learn English vocabulary well, learners can use English vocabulary learning strategies as the methods and skills. Nowadays though many researchers have switched their attention to the study of learning strategies, such as Rubin, O’Malley & Chomot, Oxford, Stern, Wen Qiufang and many other scholars, they have paid little attention to the study of vocabulary learning strategies. To compensate for it, this paper puts forward a series of vocabulary learning strategies based upon the classification of language learning strategies advanced by O’Malley & Chamot and the results of the investigation made in No.1 Senior Middle School of Shaodong County, Hunan province. The investigation exposes that the high-score group and the low-score group are different in the frequency of using vocabulary learning strategies. The paper aims at shedding light for the Senior Middle School students and teachers about this difference and arousing their consciousness of the importance of vocabulary learning strategies so that learners can choose the right strategies to enhance their learning efficiency and the teachers can better organize their teaching programs.
1 English vocabulary learning and vocabulary learning strategies
It is well known that vocabulary is essential to language learning. Therefore, it is necessary for students to acquire a fairly large number of words, phrases and idioms. However, owing to the lack of a set of learning principles, the result is disappointing.
