One way is to take part in the teacher training. Teacher training courses are generally not only directed toward the improvement of trainees’ language skills, but also toward language learning and language teaching theory and method, since most of rural English teachers have no the teaching of methodology to guard them, just depending on their experience. Therefore, the training courses are the channel to train teachers in pedagogical knowledge and practical teaching skills.
Another way is that rural teachers can carry on more exchange with urban teachers in experience as well as the latest trend of English development, and then they adjust their own teaching methods. Furthermore, the schools can also attract college graduates to join in the rural English teaching team. That can not only expand the troop of rural English teachers, but also can help rural teachers to improve their own qualities. Also, that imposes pressure on rural teachers. In order to survive in the competition, they have to improve themselves.
4. 2 Requirement of effective classroom teaching
Class management refers to the way teachers organize what goes on in the classroom. The goal of classroom management is to create a classroom atmosphere to interacting in English in meaningful ways. It is through meaningful interaction, the students can make progress in learning English. Teachers should manage the class reasonably so that students have opportunities to interact in meaningful ways.
(1) Persisting in organizing the class management in English. It is well known that a language is spoken only in its environment and people can have deep feelings of it [6]. Students, under the English environment, can accept English stimulation. Especially teachers’ nice pronunciation, intonation, rich facial expressions, these can catch students’ attention and stimulate students’ desire to speak English. Teachers should start persisting in teaching in English form the first day of the courses so that students are able to avoid mother-tongue interference. When teachers face difficulties and can’t explain them in English, they can resort to Chinese to explain them. In addition, as long as teachers insist on speaking English, the environment facilities students to imitate and improve their interest in speaking English.
(2) Organizing panel discussion. Since the class has a large number students, the group discussions can solve the problems. In the class, teachers give the theme and divide the whole class into several groups with a row. The same group is to be together to conduct exchange with each other in English. One of them is the leader who is good in spoken English. During the discussion, the teachers should move about in the class. To do it, the first is to understand the process of discussions. The second is to help students solve the issues under discussion. The third is to remind students in a slow speed of going ahead quickly and insect these in high speed whether they meet the requirements, and raise new issues in accordance with the situation. The representative of each set will summarize the outcome of the discussion and then state it. Teachers must pay attention to the answer whether it is correct, and if the mistake does not affect understanding, it can be ignored, since the views, they can seek for help from the same team members or other group members. Teachers need to organize and feedback the discussions. And they give assessment and evaluation of discussions. The job should be finished before the end of the discussion. And the spokesman and members will change at each panel discussion. The purpose is to let students learn how to talk with different people and can learn form each other. Unconsciously, the language ability has improved as well as their performances in the public.
(2) Introducing games, performances, songs into the English teaching. According to junior high school students, physical and mental development, lots of activities in the textbook, interesting and humorous, have been arranged such as songs, games riddles, dialogues, role-playing and so on. Students in the very stage are active, fond of playing games and good at imitation. Thus, English class should be organized based on these features for mobilizing the enthusiasm of the students in the class.
It is advisable that the game should be introduced in the class. In the game, these students enhance ability of expressing themselves in English. For example, during teaching 1-10 figures, after teachers teach students how to pronounce them, they leave students certain time to practice the pronunciation. Teachers make 10 cards written on Arabic numeral and draw one of them randomly. Whoever read fast and accurately is supposed to give some incentives. After repeating the practicing, the whole class is divided into several groups, each row for a group with 10 students. Each group comes to the stage in a circle. After the preceding students report a numeral, the next one reports the next numeral in order. The game goes as such. Through the game, the capacity of students’ response has been exercised as well as team spirit. Moreover, in a joyful atmosphere, the students have grasp these figures.
