1. 1 Content of questionnaire
The survey took the form of a questionnaire. Main topics are related to English teachers,class management, school environment and methods of learning oral English. It designed a totalof 41 questions, including five questions about English teachers, six about class management,three on school environment and 27 about ways of learning spoken English. The questionnaire is mainly taking the form of the closure issue, with thirty-nine multiple-choice questions and one choice question. The open question is as supplement with only one.
1. 2 Implementation of investigation and data processing
On 28 December,2007,the author carried on the stochastic questionnaires investigation to the first grade, second grade, third grade of junior middle school in BaiShuiSanZhong in QiYang county. Each grade includes only one class. Students were required to give the earnest answers truly. Their names and responses were anonymous. It amounted to 120 questionnaires and had been taken completely. And the valid questionnaire is 108(female student 58, male student 50). Then the author counted all real data of the investigation and worked on the massive analysis work on these materials. Since the subjects in the investigation involved junior middle —school students (including students in the first grade, second grade, third grade for only one class in QiYang County). The data is authentic and reliable.
2 The result and analysis
After the data was processed and classified, the issues of oral English teaching in QiYang county were learnt. These issues refer to the teachers, the class management, the school, methods of learning spoken English. All these issues will be stated in the following.
2. 1 Teaching levels of English teachers
As we all know, the quality of spoken English is related to teachers, students, management, the teaching environment and equipment construction. But regarding the countryside middle-school students, they learn English by mainly depending upon teachers and teaching materials. Comparatively, teachers are supposed to be attached more importance, since their views, behaviors and the English level influence students’ spoken English proficiency directly. Along with the application of new teaching material, English teaches not only hold the responsibility of elementary education, but they must improve their quality diligently, and especially they must be clear that the teaching goal at present is to train students’ ability to use English. In terms of students’ characters, they are eager to obtain new knowledge. They have advantageous in imitation. As for them, the main object of imitation is their teachers. Therefore, English teachers play an important role in primary stage of learning spoken English. The quality of teachers practically decides on students’ spoken English proficiency.
From question 3, we can find that 61.11% of students think that English teachers proficiency is inferior. One of reasons is that teachers are scarce. The level of English teachers influences the quality of English teachers. Although teachers have strong sense of responsibility, prepare a lesson fully and conduct a class earnestly, since their English proficiency is relatively low, it influences teaching ways and quality directly. From question 2, we can see that majority of students think that the style of conducting a class is ordinary. Therefore, it’s difficult to achieve the vivid in the class. Question 5 reflects that 57.41% of students think that teaching methods of spoken English is not good. From question 6, we find that teachers still adopt traditional educational model. They spend most time of a period in conducting a class. Therefore, students can’t be the main body of the class, let alone have the opportunity to practice spoken English. In addition, since English teachers’ proficiency is ordinary, it’s troubled in training outstanding students. It’s contradicted between teachers’ role and their low quality. Therefore, it’s urgent to improve teachers’ quality.
2. 2 English class management
Our country’s students learn English in a sole Chinese environment. Except limited periods of English class for a week, students have dim chances to communicate with each other in English. For majority of students, they are only offered the opportunity to speak English during the class, only then possibly speak English. Thus, the class management is quite important in exercising spoken English.
From question 7, we can see that students who are active to participate in spoken English exercise activities only account for 17.59%. That indicates a great number of students don’t hold opportunity of exercise. Question 8 reflects that class atmosphere is very serious, silent. In this case, students can’t speak English freely and in a relaxed way. From questions 9 and 10, we can find that teachers carry on teaching in English. That creates an original language environment for students. And that’s just what students expect. Question 11 reflects that, at present, the multimedia equipment has not been used to organize the class in the junior middle school in the countryside. Question 12 shows the teachers seldom integrate games into the classes. So, it is not good to raise students’ interest in learning English. From question 13, we can find that the role play and the group discussions in activities of practicing English account for 8.33%, 14.81% respectively. That indicates during English class, these two activities are vitalized very little, though these two activities are quite helpful to exercise spoken English exactly.
