The teachers should select suitable reading material for students’ extracurricular reading. The English graded readers, magazines, newspapers such as The Twenty First Century, English Weekly are among the students’ favorites. And the students should form a habit of reading and read extensively in English so that their problem with reading can be solved mainly by reading itself.
One way of supporting extensive reading is to set aside enough time for teachers’ short interviews with the individual students their reading. Teachers can use this time to communicate with students, recommend books, advice on reading problems, suggest activities, and encourage students to reflect on their reading and thinking.
Book conferences can also be held, not for checking comprehension but for helping the student to respond to the text and use English in real communicative situation. Teachers can elicit responses through a range of carefully prepared questions, sufficiently open-ended to provoke attempts at putting ideas together, for example: where does the story take place? Who are the main characters? Which characters impressed you most? Which characters did you sympathize with? Why did you enjoy the way the writer describes particular characters? Students can take on the roles of asking questions as well as answering them. Since the students read different books, they can exchange their thoughts and ideas freely and share their experience and learn from one another. Thus, reading and learning occur unconsciously and naturally. And by a large amount of reading, different kinds of schemata needed for comprehension of various texts are enlarged, which lays a good foundation for efficient and successful reading.
5. 7 The problem of application of interactive teaching approach
Teachers teach less and relatively. In English, learning process, adhering to the students, oriented development, it focus on the harmonious development of personality and morality, and the coordinate development of knowledge, ability and interest. The interactive approach conforms to student’s requirements. It finds a good way of development. Teachers can teach less, students can learn more. Interactive teaching approach emphasis the combination of in and out of classroom, the joint-effort of theory and practice, the cooperation between students. Sometime it will mislead teachers; according to this approach, since students learn on their own, teachers could be free. On the contrary, there are higher requirement for the teacher to guard students.
Limited exchanged. Interactive teaching approach focus train students to find problem, ask question and solve problem. It can guide students find question or topic to collect information, read information, or narrative and interview, others listen to the statements and view, consider issues. In this process, students integrate knowledge and abilities. The teaching process is a communication among teachers and students in the aspect emotion, knowledge methods and experiences, including teacher and teacher, teacher and student, student and student and so on. That included emotional communication, communicated of knowledge and methods communication, communicated of experience[10].
During the process, the healthy, positive emotions help both the student and teachers. The excellent student help the student with learning issues ad provide the good learning ways. Which will help students got knowledge in a rapid way. However, the teacher should control the degree of exchange.
Conclusion
Reading is a complex process, and it plays an exceptionally important role in the development of the overall linguistic competence. To draw the attention of teachers and students, the importance of reading is emphasized in this paper. For some reasons, many teachers still take the traditional teaching approach, which mainly explains difficult language points to help students overcome their language barriers during reading. The teaching of reading in traditional pedagogy does not reflect how and what people read in real life. As a result, the teacher is exhausted and the students feel boring. The teaching of reading should both focus on teaching language knowledge and developing students’ reading skills. The traditional teaching approach should be changed; the teaching mode should be changed from “teacher-centered: explaining” to “student-centered: reading and discussion.” The teacher is a controller, director, organizer, facilitator, prompter and participant. Students understood what is reading and what interactive approach. Based on the careful analysis of the nature of reading and the thorough comparison of the three approaches to reading, the interactive approach to the teaching of English reading in college is advocated in order to improve the students’ reading ability and encourage them to reading extensively and critically and therefore think independently. We arrive at the conclusion that it is possible and feasible to apply the interactive approach to the teaching of English reading in college. And it is noted that teacher should develop the students’ awareness of the interactive approach to reading and encourage them to read. Teachers recommend training the students’ strategies of reading. They should not forget the development of the student’s critical reading and independent thinking, which is in correspondence with the modern educational principle. The ultimate goal of teaching reading in college is that the students gradually become the critical readers and independent thinkers through successful and efficient reading.转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
