Another advantage of extroverted students in learning English is that they can catch more attention from teachers, because they are more active in class. 62.9% of the investigated extroverted students said they would actively answer teachers’ questions in class. They like to exchange their own opinions with teachers. When they have problems or they feel confused during learning English, they would like to ask for help from teachers or others. So extroverted students often can get help from teachers in time to solve their problems in learning English, which is very helpful in learning English.
From the results of BEC examinations, extroverted students are not so good in reading as introverted students. One possible reason is that extroverted students often have quick thinking, which may make them have some misunderstandings in reading. Another reason may be that the vocabularies introverted students grasp are not enough or not of deep understanding, which make them have difficulties in English reading.
3. 2. 2 Advantages & disadvantages in English learning of introverted students
Introverted students are quite and like to think things carefully and independently. This may make those who are of self- restraint very concentrated in class. However, for those who have no restraint on themselves, they may wonder their mind in class. Generally speaking, introverted students like to spend time on thinking about the language form and regulation, which help them understand the language structure more accurately and completely. Compared with extroverted students, they perform better in reading comprehension. That is because they pay more attention to the form and regulation of the language, they spend more time to digest what they learn. And they learn vocabulary in a better comprehension than those of extroverted personality. Besides, students of introverted personality are usually more persistent in study. By the investigation on the 60 English majors, 12% of the introverted students make plans on English study always, and 40% make plans when they think it is necessary, and most of the students who make plans can carry out their plans with satisfaction, but only about 34% of the extroverted students make plans on English study, and not many of them can insist on carrying out the plans. Because introverted students are more planed, they can learn English in a more planed and effective way.
According to the investigation, introverted students are usually shy, and are less confident than extroverted students in speaking English. They fear to be wrong and they are not good at communicating with others. From the interviews, introverted students do not like to practice oral English by talking with others. The ways they usually take to practice English speaking is to read and recite some articles, which cannot help them improve their communicative ability to put English they have learned into practice in an effective way. Therefore, 72% of the extroverted students of the investigation are not very good at speaking.
Most of the introverted students do not perform actively in class. Usually they won’t answer teachers’ questions on their own, even they know the answers. 36% of the introverted students as studied answered in the questionnaires that they never answer teachers’ questions actively, while most of the extroverted students would take the initiative to answer questions. If introverted students have some difficulties in learning English, they will less turn to teachers for help. Instead, they will spend much time in thinking about the problems by themselves or they even give up the efforts to solve problems. This will take up a lot of time, and make their study less efficient.
4 Suggestions on teaching and learning methods
From the analysis on the part 4, we know students of extroversion and introversion have their own advantages and disadvantages in English learning. So it has much significance for teachers and students to adopt teaching and learning strategies according to the characteristics of extrovert and introvert character.
4. 1 Some suggestions for English teachers
Although students are the main part of English learning, teachers’ important role cannot be ignored. English teachers are the designers of English teaching programs as well as supervisors of students on English learning, so if English teachers know about students’ personality types and use some teaching methods according to students’ personality, they can help English learners improve English a lot. Next are some suggestions on English teaching for consideration.
As many extroverted students are not good at reading, teachers may make clear that the aim of reading courses is not only to train students’ reading skills but to raise their thinking ability as well. When dealing with some reading materials or articles that are not easy for students to understand, teachers can introduce the relative background or knowledge about the materials or articles so that students may understand more.
