2. 1 Research design
The participants for this study are 60 Grade4 English majors who entered Hunan Agricultural University in the year of 2004. The reason to choose Grade4 English majors is that they have learnt English for four years in university, and their achievements in English learning can be perceived in a more thorough way. Two questionnaires will be given to the participants: one is EPQ Chinese Adult version aiming to measure the participants’ personality types, and the other is about participants’ performance in English learning. As all the participants had taken TEM4 and some of them had attended BEC examinations, questions of their marks of TEM4 and BEC examinations are included in the English performance questionnaire. According to the results of questionnaires, some representative students of different personalities will be selected to have interviews.
2. 2 Research participants
The four-year study of the current Grade4 English majors in the college of foreign language in Hunan Agricultural University can be divided into two periods. In the first two years, all of students learnt comprehensive English skills, and at the end of the first two years, they took the TEM4, a nation-wide standardized English proficiency tests. In the rest two years, students chose to learn in the specialized fields including two directions: Business English, Translation for linguistics and culture. The number of students who major in business English is more or less equal to the other field. In order to get enough number of the participants, all participants of this study will be both Business English majors and Translation for linguistics and culture majors so as to see the relationship between extroverted/introverted personality and English study more clearly.
2. 3 Research methods
In this research, two questionnaires will be given to all the participants and a interview will be given to some of them.
2. 3. 1 Questionnaires
The personality questionnaire starts with an attached part including two blank filing items and three multiple-choice items. Participants need to give their personal information (gender and age) and their self-evaluation on their own personality types and their opinions on the relationship between personality and English learning.
The personality questionnaire used in the study is the EPQ Chinese Adult Version (Appendix1) which was revised by Chen Zhonggeng. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was first compiled by the famous professor of human psychology, Hans Eysenck in 1952. It was revised for several times and finally was consisted of a series of personality inventories designed to measure the major dimensions of personality, namely, extroversion-introversion, neuroticism-stability, and psychoticism-superego. There are two versions, one for adults, and the other for children. Now the EPQ has been an internationally recognized standard method to be widely applied in personality determination in the fields of education, criminality, metal disease and other fields. Compared with other personality questionnaire, The EPQ refers to fewer concepts, and is convenient to be used. It is more reliable and effective. Therefore it has a great influence in personality determination and has been revised and applied in many other countries.
In China, EPQ is one of the most frequently adopted questionnaires of personality with great applicative values and prospects. It has been translated and revised by many scholars such as Gong Yaoxian, Qian Mingqi and so on. The EPQ Chinese Version is a mature personality questionnaire translated and revised by Professor Chen Zhonggeng on the basis of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The EPQ Chinese Adult Version includes four scales- P (Psychoticism), E (extroversion/introversion), N (neuroticism), and L (lie). Statistical results showed that EPQ-RSC had satisfactory reliability and validity of Scale E, N and L, and relatively lower reliability and validity of Scale P, which could still meet the accepted criteria. It has been proved to be reliable and valid to be applied among Chinese people.
There are all together 85 items in the EPQ Chinese Adult Version. Based on the purpose of this thesis, the author selects E-scale to identify extrovert/introvert. Among all the items, 21 items are for E-scale, whose original numbers are 1, 5, 9, 13, 16, 22, 26, 29, 32, 35, 37, 40, 43, 46, 49, 53, 56, 61, 72, 76 and 85. For convenience, the numbers of these items are rearranged by new orders: from 1 to 21.
The questionnaire about students’ performance in English learning includes questions on students’ respective performance in English learning, such as their good points and weak points and their plans for English learning and their performance in English classroom. Because the participants took TEM4 when they were in Grade2, the scores of this test will be asked in the questionnaires as a reference of the study of relationship between their personality and English achievements. Many Business English students had attended examinations of BEC Vantage and BEC Higher which tests reading, writing, listening and speaking. When the total Grade of BEC examinations come out, each level of reading, writing, listening, and speaking is also marked on the report card, thus, candidates’ level of each part can be observed easily. That’s why BEC examinations were be another reference in the questionnaire.
