Introduction
As the most widely used language in the world, English plays an important role in international communication. Nowadays, China has become very close to the world in every area such as economy, politics, and culture, which makes English learning more popular and important in China. In universities, English is an important course for all the students, no matter what their majors are. As it is generally accepted by companies that English is a basic language skill for an employee, it will be easier for a university graduate to find a job if he learns English well. For students who major in English, the requirements are much higher. After they finish study in university, English majors are expected to grasp English thoroughly, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, translation and other related skills.
Even in a same class, with same teachers, English learners may have different performance in English learning. For example, some English learners can achieve more than others. According to some researchers, second language learning is different from foreign language learning, and English learning in China is not second language learning but foreign language learning. However, people still tend to treat them equally and apply second language learning acquisition research results to foreign language learning and teaching. From linguistics’ point of view, many factors can influence second language acquisition (SLA), and individual difference is an important one of them. “Second language acquisition (SLA), formally established itself as a discipline around 1970s, refers to the systematic study of how one person acquires a second language subsequent to his native language.” [1] There are five main factors that affect SLA as individuals: “Language aptitudes, motivation, use of learning strategies, age of acquisition and personality.” [1] Among them, personality plays an important role in second language learning. Extroverted personality and introverted personality, as the representative traits of personalities, are usually researched alone.
This article tries to demonstrate the relationship between extroverted/introverted personality and English learning, aiming at finding out some effective methods for English teaching and learning according to students’ personality types. The study will explain how university students’ personality, particularly the extrovert and introvert character, affect their English learning by trying to answer the following two questions:
(1) How do English majors of different personality (extroverted and introverted personality) perform in their English learning?
(2) Can extroverted and introverted personality determine English majors’ English levels?
The paper is organized as the followings: part 1 will review the previous studies on extroverted/introverted personality and language learning. Part 2 will be the research design and methods. In part 3, research results and the main findings will be displayed. Part 4 will give some suggestions on teaching and leaning English.
1 Review of previous studies
“In psychology, personality has been explored in terms of a series of personality traits, including extroversion, introversion, risk-taking, empathy, and inhabitation, and so on.” [2] And a number of personality characteristics have been supposed to affect second language learning. However, it has been difficult to demonstrate the effects in empirical studies, which is largely due to the difficulty in identification and measurement. Although different studies produced different results, the personality traits such as extroversion, talkative, self-esteem, self-confidence can be found in successful second language learners in terms of communicative ability. Certain personality traits appear helpful in completing certain tasks in learning a second language. Therefore, the study on the effect of personality on the second language can contribute to the second language learning. 转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
