

Conclusion
Numbers is an important part of language, which is filled with mystery and connotations both in English and Chinese. No one could live in our daily lives without using numbers, because people’s lives are surrounded by them. However, different nations show quite different appetites for numbers because of the different cultural backgrounds. The same numbers in Chinese or English cultures has the same or opposite meanings. Therefore, cultural influence on the numbers of a language should be taken seriously when we learn a foreign language. We should understand and study numbers from the way of culture differences. Then we will understand the relationship between the concept of numbers and cultures. Therefore, the analysis of pragmatic differences between numbers and their connotations in English and Chinese idioms is crucial for understanding and using them correctly. It is generally agreed nowadays that literal translation and free translation do not form a binary contrast, and that the most appropriate translation strategy will vary according to the text being translated and the purpose of the translation. The translators should have a relatively overall understanding of the Chinese and English culture in the purpose of conveying the correct meaning of numbers, especially their idioms. Therefore, a comparison and an analysis of the figures will help us understand the culture of China and those in English speaking countries and enable us to avoid misunderstanding or conflicts caused by cultural differences in cross-cultural communications.
