In our daily life, people make use of a humor to coordinate social interaction. Taking a general view of the linguistic researches on humorous speeches, the scholars studied this language phenomenon from different perspectives, such as rhetoric, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics. As a kind of utterance art, humor is based not only on the linguistic internal rules but also on the use of speech in a special context which is the object of pragmatic study. In the following passage, the author will try to make a special analysis about the English humor from the pragmatic view hoping to benefit the readers’ cross-cultural communication.

1 A general view of pragmatics
To analyze the pragmatic characteristics reflected in English humor as well as humorous effects achieved with them, it’s necessary to have a general review of pragmatics. In this section, the author will mainly introduce the pragmatics’ definition and some pragmatics concepts and theories concerned.
1. 1 Definition of pragmatics
Pragmatics is a new branch of study in the area of linguistics; its development and establishment in the 1960s and 1970s resulted mainly from the expansion of the study of linguistics. It can be defined in various ways. A general definition is that it is the study of how speakers of a language use sentences to effect communication. In another word, it studies how people comprehend and produce a communicative act or a speech act in a conversation. It deals with how language users mean by different signs in different speech events or contexts. Pragmatics is concerned about those dynamic or contextual or non-conventional meanings of words and sentences articulated by language users.

1. 2 Some concepts and theories concerned
Now that the definition of pragmatics is made clear, it is necessary to view what pragmatics studies in details. Considering those that are mostly utilized in English humor, only the basic objects of the pragmatic study will be introduced and analyzed. In this section, the author of this paper will give a brief introduction of some concept and theories concerning English humor.
1.2.1 Deixis
Deixis is a connection bridge between the form of language and context. The understanding of deixis is very important for successful communication. It is the reference by means of an expression whose interpretation is relative to the extra-linguistic context of the utterance, such as who is speaking, the time or place of speaking, or the current location in the discourse. Therefore, the deictic expression fall into three categories: person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis. Person deixis indicates the roles of participants in a conversation, such as some personal pronouns “I, you, he, she, they”. In the communication, we should notice each participant in the discourse shifts from being “I” to being “you” constantly. Spatial deixis is the expression indicate the place, such as this, that, these, those, here, there, left, right, up, down, come, go, bring, take ect. In most case, the location is settled physically. However, some scholars even think the true pragmatic basis of spatial deixis is the psychological distance. Usually, psychologically close objects are also physically close to us, while psychologically distant ones will normally be physically distant. Temporal deixis concerns time related to a conversation that is important for understanding the utterance, such as now, then, ago, later, yesterday, today, tomorrow, tonight ect.转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
