Introduction
Wushu, which is one of China’s cultural gems, in more than 2000 year’s history, has been developed together with many other cultural forms such as Chinese philosophy, religion, military affairs, Chinese medicine and artist into a special national sport event. With globalization of wushu, English translation of wushu terms becomes more and more important. However, those characteristics which make wushu somewhat of a “special, local product” also makes it very difficult not only for foreigners to understand, but also for interpreters to translate into other languages. Although its function cannot be overstated, translation plays an active part in spreading wushu. As language is a carrier of culture, if the translators of wushu terms translation learn more about the culture related to the English language, they will be more aware of the cultural differences. The translators can by no means neglect the cultural information embodied in wushu terms. The thesis tries to analysis the cultural performance in wushu terms translation through cultural angle approach.
1 Wushu and wushu terms
Among China's well-kept treasures, one that catches the imagination of foreigners is wushu. Wushu is an important component of the cultural heritage of China, with a rich content that remains untarnished over the centuries. Moreover, wushu has been formed through a long-term study by many masters who have pooled the mode of thinking, code of conduct, concept of values and aesthetic interests of the Chinese people.
1. 1 Definitions of wushu
Wushu functioned significantly in the simple matter of people's survival through China's many wars and political upheavals. Today, wushu has been organized and systematized into a formal branch of study. It reigns as one of the most popular national sports in China, and is practiced by the young and old alike for health promotion, self-defense, self-cultivation, recreational pursuit and competition. We can find different definitions of wushu:
Wushu, on the basis of the ancient China's technique system with skills of attack as its major content, has developed into a national sports event and part of China's traditional culture(武术是由中国古代以技击为主要内容所形成的技术体系发展而成的民族形式的体育运动项目,是中国传统文化的一部分)(徐才). [1]
Wushu, with attack and defense as its major skills, and routine practice and combat sits sport form, is a traditional sports event focusing on both internal and external cultivation(武术是以攻防技击为主要技术内容、以套路演练和搏斗对抗为运动形式、注重内外兼修的民族传统体育项目)(丘丕相). [2]
Generally speaking, wushu is a sport with rich cultural essence as the traditional Chinese culture generated wushu routine. Wushu advocates vigorous and promising Chinese cultural spirit and calls for harmony, combination of form and spirit, a holistic thinking style, combination of internal and external exercises and coexistence of various wushu styles. Besides, Wushu is not only good for health, but also high in artistic value, rich in recreational and educational functions.转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
