

Abstract: Modern Business English plays an ever-increasing role in international trade, as a branch of English for Specific Purposes, Business English has distinctive linguistic traits. This paper attempts to analyze the linguistic features of Business English at the lexical level, to grasp the characteristics in favor of improving the veracity of Business English use in business trade. What’s more, with the view to solving the problems in Business English translation, the paper also explores and summarizes some strategies and principles in translating Business English. This paper points out that translator engaged in Business English lexicons into Chinese should pay extra attention to learning professional knowledge in Business English, understanding its features, and studying translation strategies under the principles of correctness, exactitude, and standardized consistency.

摘 要:现代商务英语在国际贸易活动中起着越来越重要的作用,而作为特殊用途英语,商务英语有其独特的语言特征。本文从词汇层面分析商务英语特征,探讨和归纳了商务英语的词汇特点。把握这些特点,对于经贸英语在商务活动中使用的准确性非常有利。此外本文还针对商务英语翻译中所存在的一些问题,探讨了商务英语词汇翻译的一些策略和原则,指出熟悉商务英语专业知识,掌握商务英语词汇特点,遵循准确严谨,规范统一的翻译原则,研究翻译策略是翻译工作者应该高度重视的问题。

Introduction
Since the end of world warⅡ, the global economy has developed rapidly, science and technology change with each passing day. International trade, finance, insurance, postal communications, tourism, science and technology exchanges, and other activities are experiencing an unprecedented flourish. Under such circumstance, English as a tool of communication plays an important role in these activities. In order to meet the requirement of learning English in all categories of personal needs, English for Specific Purposes(ESP) has come into being. Business English as a branch of ESP has become very important under the background of economic globalization. Now China is a member country of WTO and plays an important role in the international business activities. Apparently, doing well in Business English translation becomes more and more important.
As a branch of ESP, Business English has its own characteristics. The research of Business English should be based on the research of its lexicons and its translation. As a basic unit,words are like the bricks of a building, no matter how high the building is, it must be constructed by brick one by one. Successful translation of lexicons is a guarantee of good Business English translation. A good vocabulary is the basic qualification of a translator, but it is not to say that the translator who master a large number of words must translate well, they should use it correctly and skillfully. In Business English translation, due to the proper characteristics of Business English, comprehension and choice of word should be deal with carefully. In dictionary, the definition of business is “buying and selling (especially as a profession), commerce; trade”. We can know from its definition that the business trade involves the benefit of both economic entities. Both sides attempt to make more profits by the trade, once the mistake happens, the consequence would be fearful and the loss would be tremendous. The translator should pay extra attention to learning professional knowledge in Business English and its features, and studying the translation strategies, such as the principles of correctness, rigorousness, and standardized consistency.
1 The lexical characteristics of Business English
How can we do a good job in translation, especially in Business English? There is no doubt that we must have linguistic knowledge of target language and literary capacity of source language as well, otherwise, not only no good results will be got but funny mistakes will be made. Word is a basic unit of a language which can be used independently, differentiate and analyze the meaning of word is translator’s basic skill. Translator often makes mistake because of misunderstanding the meaning of word, therefore, successful lexical translation is the guarantee of the whole article translation. As a branch of ESP, the words of Business English have its own characteristics, which will be discussed detailedly in the following.
1. 1 Polysemy
Polysemy is a common feature peculiar to all natural languages. This is particularly true of highly developed languages like English. In modern English, an overwhelming majority of words are polysemous. There are words that have two or three meanings, and the most commonly used ones can have as many senses as over a hundred. However, when a word is first coined, it is always monosemic, but in the course of development, the same symbol may be employed to express new meanings as it is impossible to have one symbol in a language to denote one thing in the world, the result is polysemy.
