3.1.4 Strain ability
Different interpreters, even if have the same level in the process, but because they have different skills on dealing with matter in the negotiations, that may result to they have different result. Some interpreters can reach concordance between the two parties in a relaxed and harmonious atmosphere through their own efforts, even if the most difficult negotiations, but some are not good at handing skills problem and these problem are not the language problem. How the Chinese and foreign sides say, how they translate. Frequently, they have more and more trouble, of course, this is the responsibility of the main speaker, but if the interpreter could play a “filter” role, which briefly reconciled, relaxed atmosphere, but also conducive to the smooth progress of the negotiations.
3.1.4.1 Rapid reaction
Interpretation, that is to say quickly respond to English in the brain when across the Chinese, quickly respond to Chinese in the brain when across the English. The interpreter needs the ability of the bilingual quick change in a flash of the interpretation. Without this, quick realized nothing. At the same time, a good interpreter must understand that he/she heard content, then through the rapid reaction by the brain put the translation language out. If the reaction is slow, that causes to lose the meaning of the source language. Rapid reaction needs special training, which is necessary for improving memory and strengthening comprehension.
3.1.4.2 Strain skills
In the process of dealing with the unexpected events, the interpreter should not only have excellent psychological quality and solid professional skills, but also should require some strain skills, so that all types of emergencies received can be satisfactorily resolved.
Speech were vulgar language, topics do not meet each other’s cultural habits, improper of jokes, etc, belong to the improper speech, it is easy to arouse each other’s displeasure or disgust, and even misunderstood, and is likely to impede communication between the two sides, if meeting these problem, interpreter should not necessarily have to be totally faithful to the original words, and can be diluted or alternative treatment.
For example, the Chairman of the World Wildlife Fund inspects Wolong panda home in the China, the local government leaders to receive visitor. They met in the VIP room. After greetings, the owner said: “In Wolong regions, not only Pandas are beautiful, the scenery is beautiful too, I suggest that you look at the forest and the mountains.” But the President said: “Well, I going there just to see pandas, I just don't like bloody mountains.” The literal translation is: “这个嘛, 我只是去看熊猫,才不爱看什么鬼山。” bloody is not a good word in British English word, be equal to “damned”(他妈的), expressed to the something very disgusting . However, the Chinese tone was very friendly, what the guest said were very improper and impolite, and the atmosphere was incompatible. If the literal past, it is certainly offend to the host. The interpreter put it to, “我这趟主要想去看看熊猫,大山恐怕没时间看了。” [9] Surely, a good interpreter should study how to translate accordance with the actual situation, respect for the differences cultural and privacy of the two sides.
3.1.5 Extrinsic behaviour
As the interpreter who is work at foreign affairs job, ought to understand foreign affairs proprieties, social decorum, clothing ought to decent and elegant.
Interpreter’s clothing should be decent, dressing according to the case. If the clothing of the service object was casual, the interpreter can dress dishabille, but can not be too casual. On the contrary, if the service object dressed gown, male interpreter should dress business suit, female interpreter should dress suit, but they all not too rarefied. Female interpreter’s clothing should not be too thin, too short and the color should not be too fresh, male interpreter can dress business suit without tie necktie in familiar occasion, but they wear sandal should wear socks in summer.
The interpreters should be elegant in modest. The interpreters should pay attention to his/her identity, and with service object maintain a certain distance. During work time interpreter should be not behave too casual or intimate in performance.
The interpreter’s posture should be decent, and the interpreter’s distance is neither too far nor too near between the speakers. Standing interpretation, interpreter shouldn’t put hand into pocket; sitting interpretation, interpreter shouldn’t jitter or put the legs apart. In the conversation speakers may be exciting, ecstasy and anger. To be an interpreter must remain calm and don’t imitate Speaker’s rich expressions and tone. The best interpreter, they should dress properly, with the aim of making themselves inconspicuous, it is said, is the one who can make himself invisible in the communication.
