On the Requirements of a Good Interpreter

Abstract: Along with the deepening of globalization, interpretation has become an indispensable bridge among different languages and cultures. Marketing demands for interpreters is growing, and the technical of interpretation is increasingly vital. However, the issue of quality of interpretation services has increasingly become the target of people’s view. In this article, the writer attempts to discuss the concept, classifications and characteristics of interpretation，the difficulties of interpretation, which is the requisite requirements to be a good interpreter .The author puts forward to be a good interpreter, he/she need pay attention three points, it concludes that the quality and cultivation of interpreter, the preparative work of the interpretation and the note-taking of interpretation. The research is of great significance to the development of the interpretation.

摘  要:随着全球一体化程度的日益加深，口译已成为不同语言文化间交流不可缺少的桥梁. 市场对口译人才的需求在增长，对口译的技术愈来愈重视，然而同时带来的口译服务质量问题也越来越成为人们关注的对象。本文试图从讨论口译的概念、分类和特点，口译难点来重点分析要成为一名优秀的译员所需要的条件。作者提出成为一名优秀的译员，需要注意三点，包括译员的素质和修养，口译的准备工作和口译笔记。本研究对口译的发展具有重要的意义。

Introduction
The history of interpretation can be traced back to the early time of human society. It is believed that interpretation became a formal profession after the Paris Peach Conference. “After World War II, with the establishment of international organizations and economic relations between different countries, more and more professional interpreters were trained.”[1] Most of them, however, were associated with the world of diplomacy and international conference. Along with the end of the Cold War, the political and economical communication among countries became unprecedentedly prosperous. The importance of interpretation has been undoubtedly put to a higher level.
As globalization becomes an irreversible trend, interpretation has been playing an increasingly important role in the international exchanges. Marketing the demands for interpreters is growing, and to the technical of interpretation is more and more recognition, but also brought the issue of quality of interpretation services have increasingly become the target of people's attention. What I want to do in this paper is to find requirements to be a good interpreter and help the interpreters to avoid some mistakes and improve their interpreting abilities.
In this paper, I will discuss the concept, classifications and characteristics of interpretation, the difficulties of interpretation and the requirements of a good interpreter. The focus is on the requirements to be a good interpreter through the quality and cultivation of interpreter, the preparative work of the interpretation and the note-taking of interpretation.

1  The concept, classifications and characteristics of interpretation
    Interpretation is “a service which allows participants at international meetings to speak and follow proceeding in their own languages, and is widely viewed as a particularly impressive form of rapid, instant translation.”[2] In this globalized world, as China is opening up wider to the outside world, the importance of foreign languages, particularly English, cannot be overestimated. With the improvement of foreign language proficiency in China, however, demand for qualified interpreters and translators is not diminishing, but increasing. Hence, the social status of interpreters and translators has been enhanced.
1. 1 The concept of interpretation
Translation, essentially, is the faithful representation, in one language, of what is written in another language. And it needs to submit that interpretation, essentially, means an extempore oral reproduction, in one language, of what is said in another language. The following two points are need for clarification. Firstly, it cannot be viewed as a merely linguistic undertaking, but should be regarded as an aspect of a larger domain namely, that of communication. In the case of complex discourses or speeches, interpretation involves not only “linguistic proficiency”, but also “encyclopedic knowledge”. Secondly, a few words on the use of terms. In the United Nations (and, for that matter, at all official international meetings) the term “translate”, “translator” or “translation” is used when the immediate result of the work is a written text, and the term “interpret”, “interpreter” or “interpretation”, when the immediate result is a speech reproduced orally in a language (always in one of the working languages) other than that “spoken by the original speaker”.
