On the contrary, the other teacher just used the textbook to give a description of the “black hole” to the student, with no picture, almost no gestures and facial expressions. Consequently, the atmosphere of the classroom was very dull and even when the teacher tried to elicit some response from the students, the efforts were almost in vain. What we can see from this example is that non-verbal behavior is really very important in a language class. Consciously or not, the first teacher has made good use of it and has achieved satisfactory results. This should arouse the attention of teachers of English if they want to make the class livelier and create a more relaxed atmosphere for the students in the classroom.
3. Application of non-verbal behavior in oral English classes
People usually make use of non-verbal behavior subconsciously and identify the meaning conveyed in it by the speaker intuitively. They, however, seldom consider consciously how to apply this strategy when they communicate. Actually, the application of non-verbal behavior in real communication will be able to greatly improve the effect of communication from both sides of the encoder and the decoder. Especially to the teachers of oral English, it could be of great benefit to make conscious use of the knowledge of non-verbal behavior in their teaching of oral English. They would surely improve the result of their teaching if they could arouse their students ’realization of the function of non-verbal behavior and be able to make intentional use of it in the process of communication.
3. 1 Principles of non-verbal behavior in oral English classes
Oral English teacher should have a full understanding of the implication of non-verbal behavior, master the teaching contents, and get familiar with the teaching targets. They should design the non-verbal behavior meticulously, in order to match the verbal communication in teaching. Still, English teachers should be sophisticated enough to catch the information from students’ eyes and adjust promptly and use suitable non-verbal behavior according to the specific situation of class teaching, in order to make full use of non-verbal behavior in oral English teaching. At the same time, they also should obey the principles of applying non-verbal behavior. The author gives some principles when applying non-verbal behavior in oral English classes.
3. 1. 1 Principle of appropriateness
Everything has its limitation, beyond which the good result will tend to be bad. Therefore, the using of non-verbal behavior in oral English classes should also obey the appropriate principle. Teacher’s smile can encourage students and make them confident. However, during the whole process of teaching, if the teacher keeps smiling all the time, no matter what the teaching contents are, no matter what the classroom order is, it absolutely will result in the loss of interest in learning English and the doubt of the teacher’s ability of managing the class, rather than giving encouragement and self-confidence. Likewise, the appropriate distance between teacher and students in class also can shorten their psychic distance, so that it will arouse their enthusiasm, enliven the atmosphere of class, and develop the student’s initiative sense of participation, and strengthen their confidence. Psychological studies show that, students’ confidence and their expectation for teacher’s attitude influence their choice on seat in classroom. The students who are more confident and expect for teacher’s positive attitude, incline to choose the seats near the teacher. While the students who are lack of confidence and expect no praise from teacher tend to sit far away from the teacher, especially in oral English classes. Therefore, being aware of the individual distinction, the teacher should always change his/her position in the classroom intentionally, and often get close to the students’ seats. As a result of smaller psychic distance between teacher and students, there will be face-to-face communication. What’s more, the class will become more relaxed and vivid because of their cordial feeling toward the teacher, and it’s very helpful to develop students’ interest and inspire their learning passion. However, if the teacher keeps close to students for a long time, it will make the students feel uneasy or even make them misunderstand that they are monitored by teacher because they are doing something wrong. Thus, teacher must get full knowledge of non-verbal behavior and obey the appropriate principle in oral English teaching. Otherwise, it can’t play a positive role in assisting verbal communication in oral English teaching.
3. 1. 2 Principle of nature
Beauty lies in nature. All the non-verbal behaviors applied in teaching must follow this principle. The teaching effect will be cut down when any exaggerated or artificial non-verbal behavior is used. For instance, an affected action, a unnatural smile, a stiff expression, exaggerated tone or some kind of non-verbal behavior repeated monotonously. How can they convey meaning and show affection in class? On the contrary, the students will disgust or even despise them. They can’t assist teaching in class, but will disperse the students’ attention. However, natural, proper non-verbal behavior will enliven and glorify the class and stimulate students’ interest in learning English. In oral English teaching, teacher should know the contents of the textbook exactly, and capture all the various non-verbal factors needed in illustrating the contents, so that the non-verbal behavior, such as eyesight, face expression, gesture, standing posture, tone, etc, can be applied harmoniously.
