Introduction
The history of translation is as long as over 2000 years old, and the translation studies have existed for a long time. However, the translation studies put great emphasis on author and original works, completely neglecting the translator’s status and functions. They always regarded the translator as “faithful servant” and were concerned with how the translator should be faithful to the author and the source text. But with the Cultural Turn in translation studies, it’s inclined to study and research the subjects and subjectivity. Thus, the subjectivity of the translator has been gradually acknowledged and established. “In our present world the need for extensive, accurate, and effective communication between those using different languages gives the translator a position of new and strategic importance”.[1] In a sense translation is the communication among different languages and culture backgrounds, which determines that the translator must have his own subjectivity and activity. In order to communicate between different languages, the translator has taken an essentially difficult and often thankless task to translate the original work. The translator has purposely and consciously attempted to change a message in order to make it conform to his own political, social, or religious predilections because of different culture. “The dangers of subjectivity in translating are directly proportionate to the potential emotional involvement of the translator in the message”.[1] Therefore, the subjectivity of the translator means that he involves the subjective agency in translating activities, including subjectivity, purpose, creativity, on the respect of the source text and the influence of environment and the horizons of the translator.

This thesis aims at studying the subjectivity of the translator. It will be divided into five parts to discuss the subject. Firstly, it’s to interpret the subjectivity of the translator. With the Cultural Turn in translation studies, more and more scholars have been paving the way for studies of the translator’s subjectivity. Thus, the translator’s active role has been acknowledged, and the subjectivity of the translator is as an undeniable fact and should not be ignored. Secondly, it’s designed to show the connotations of the translator’s subjectivity, which is represented in various ways such as in the process of translation, by the inter-subjectivity of translation subjects and by receptors and reception contexts. The translator’s subjectivity is involved in the whole process of translation. From reading the source text to interpretation and translating, the translator needs to use his activity, creativity and cultural consciousness etc. to achieve his translational purpose. Also the translator is not isolated in translating but closely related to these translation subjects like author, source text and readers. Moreover, translation is practiced in receptor context and culture, and the target language texts are to be read by target language reader. So the translator should take readers and target language culture in consideration in translating practice. Thirdly, it’s to discuss the representations of the translator’s subjectivity. In the first place, the translator is as an active reader, who is to dig the deep meaning of the original works. And then, he is to reproduce the target language text taking the role of a writer, not just to re-visualize the source text. Also the translator is as a creator to conform to target language culture, and his work should be contented by readers. And translation itself is a very difficult and complicated task, which predestines that the translator must involve several identities in himself and bring different roles into play. Fourthly, some personal and external restriction factors are explored. The translator’s subjectivity will be restricted by his own bilingual ability and the target culture norms and so on. With a proper and dialectical understanding of the concept of the translator’s subjectivity, the translator will bring his subjective agency into full play.  Finally, since translator’s status and functions have been recognized and accepted, the translator should know how to display his subjectivity better. He will pay emphasis on source language and target language culture.转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
