Conclusion of students’ comments: All the analyses and comments can be referred into several points which support the benefits of cooperative learning in college English teaching.
1. Cooperative learning stimulates students’ passion to learn, more actively and enthusiastically. All the members in the same group have to finish the assigned task cooperatively; each one will have to exert his greatest effort to end his task.
2. Cooperative learning cultivates students’ senses of cooperation. Since this method focuses on “to learn in cooperation, and to cooperate in learning,” [15] students will raise their awareness of cooperation accordingly.
3. Cooperative learning improves their friendship and raises the teaching efficiency. Undoubtedly, their thoughts and ideas will be exchanged frequently when discussion. They care for each other, help each other. They have the same purpose, which contributes their stimulus and naturally gives full play to their innovation.
5 The existent problems and suggestions on cooperative learning
From the experiment and analysis, some problems are apparently seen when practicing cooperative learning in college English teaching. While the paper attempts to find out some suggestions on how to deal with problems so that this approach will be better practiced.
5. 1 Existent problems
Great merits of cooperative learning have been exposed through the analysis of various examples. However, some problems and misunderstandings arising from the application need consideration and improvement [14]. Based on the questionnaire and comments, some of the problems in implanting cooperative language learning are reviewed below.
5. 1. 1 Grouping chaos
At the initial stage of implementing of cooperative learning by the writer, there arose chaos in classrooms, e.g., the students ran about from one seat to another, and shouts and noise could be heard in every corner of the classrooms. All this chaos, derived from grouping that are inevitable in implementing cooperative learning, are predicable, so they are called one indispensable part in “Group Processing”. According to comments, students said at the beginning they got too excited to concentrate on their learning task when they were grouped, because most of them needed to change their seats. The reasons are summarized as 2 points: 1) students are not acquainted with cooperative learning approach, 2) learning how to learn cooperative with other classmate takes time.
5. 1. 2 Formalization
Some teachers attach much importance to the form of cooperative learning, but ignore the purpose and the process, even the nature of it. Where there is a question, there is a discussion as required. Sometimes students have not been adaptable to the situation before the teacher asks to end the discussion. The teacher should give students enough time to study, question, discuss, and communicate to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to exchange opinions so much so that the wisdom of the students’ can be given full play.
