2 Reasons for examination-oriented education
Exam-oriented education is an education system on the purpose of examinations services. Examination is a way to test students’ knowledge and ability. Actually, it is a system of alienation for people’s expectations to select good talent.[10] It not only manifested in the mode of operation, the purpose of the examination, examination on the mentality, but also in the view on society in the future. Economic base determines the superstructure, people is the sum of social relations, whose mentality is also determined economic base. Under the low social productive forces circumstances, if one wanted to change his or her own situation, who often only through studying, and the ultimate purpose is to pass the examination. It seems that it’s difficult to find another appropriate ways. Exam-oriented education arises under such circumstances.
2. 1 Reasons for examination-oriented education system
China has so many people, scores and diploma become the unique standard to select the "talent." In other hand, there is heave pressure to pass the college entrance examination, and strong will to seek fame and fortune. In order to meet the needs of social reality, along the track of the exam-oriented education, students are "fired" into a higher stage of education, therefore, the test scores are still the most important evaluations, the exam-oriented training, test skills are the most important points.
The first reason is education departments. There are many aspects to improve in the setting of course, the curricula and school curriculum, as well as the student achievement on the assessment. Second is related with Chinese education level. Why the exam-oriented education is not so formidable in elementary and junior middle school? Because of nine-year compulsory education. However, when we are in senior middle school, the phenomenon of exam-oriented education become fiercer, now, after all, not every high school graduates will be able to university. Up to now, we have struggled for so many years but only 60 percent of high school graduates can receive higher education in our state. Out rate is very high, as long as the rate of elimination, certainly the examination can not be avoided. Third reason is the concept of the community. Recent years, although we engage in vocational and technical education, and try our best to change educational concept, but we must recognize that most of parents gave the child provides a path of development, and make a plan to successful future, expect his son or daughter must go to a good university, and this guidance is also formidable. So, this caused a series of unnecessary competition, the schools have no choice but to set the examination, and accept the good score.
Certainly, examination will continue to exist because of its the objectivity, impartiality and comprehensive. The objectivity of the examination refer that the content, time, place, subjects, and the results of the test can’t be arbitrarily changed by one’s will, likes and dislikes. Impartiality means one is equal before the papers or a certain type of test no matter what kind of people. Comprehensive means that through the examination, the candidate's ability and the knowledge who has mastered can be more overall testing. These features are unique at present circumstances. Meanwhile, test is generally willing to accept for talent’s election, which means it has a strong mass base. No matter is in China or foreign, developed or developing countries, test mode are used for talent selection. Finally, the present atmosphere of “all people working to make more money,” [11] it will be difficult for people of outstanding talent to appear.
2. 2 Reasons for present problems in English teaching
The most important reason is lack of English environment and English thinking. Why Chinese students’ English is often called “deaf and dumb English”? The examination-oriented education is one main reason for Chinese students “deaf and dumb English”. As a result of this orientation, Chinese students are only trained to answer multiple choice questions without paying much attention to the cultivation of communicative competence. Of course, this is a problem of the whole educational system in China. This is one objective reason for the poor English language proficiency on the part of Chinese learners.
The second reason which I feel often ignored is Chinese students’ interpersonal communication style.[12] Traditionally, Chinese students are more introvert than extrovert. They are timid and shy and do not actively communicate with others. As a result, this may serve as a drag on their communicative competence. 转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
