

Abstract: Teacher talk is an instrument for the teacher to implement the teaching plan and the main source for the student to obtain the input of knowledge. Bilingual teaching for the subject course is aimed to improve both subject knowledge for the major and language proficiency through English and Chinese. This paper attempts to discuss present problems of teacher talk in college bilingual teaching by a survey which carried out in Hunan Agricultural University. Accordingly, the author puts forward the appropriate approaches to improve the quality of teacher talk in bilingual teaching classroom. The research is of great significance to college bilingual education.

摘 要: 教师话语是教师在课堂上向学生传输知识的主要途径。大学专业课中双语教学是以英汉两种语言对学科专业知识进行讲授并以提高学生的专业知识和语言水平为目的的教学方法。本文通过对湖南农业大学双语教学问卷调查的方式,分析了教师话语在双语教学中现存的问题。作者就此提出了在大学双语教学中提高教师话语质量的合理方法。本研究对大学双语教学具有重要意义。以期有效的教师话语能够正确运用于双语课堂教学,达到促进双语教学的目的。

Introduction
With the economic globalization and China’s entry into WTO, the society needs all kinds of talents increasing. To succeed in present society, a person should not only possess advanced subject knowledge, but also master at least one foreign language. The last two decades have witnessed great changes of English teaching in China. But the present English can still not meet the social demand. It is necessary to carry out quality-oriented education to enable the students to use English as the instrument to gain more information required for their improvement in the subject matters. In this new rush for English learning in China, bilingual education has become a hot issue. Not only universities, but also middle schools, primary schools and even kindergartens are proclaiming that they have “bilingual education plan”. Some bilingual subject courses have been set up in many universities, such as Peking University, Qinghua University, Fudan University, Hunan University etc. These courses are taught bilingually by the teachers to help the junior, senior undergraduate students and postgraduates acquire subject knowledge and improve these students’ English. This kind of bilingual education often involves the teaching of subject courses through English while Chinese is also allowed to be used. It is expected to improve students’ English language proficiency through creating more language learning environments and to help them to obtain more subject matters with English as instrument.
