3. 2 The communicative and educational value of biography
It is well known that the fine art of literature should be descended from one generation to another. This is literature character of inheriting. Here we can understand the communication and education function of biography. In biographical world, people can gain the panorama of seething life of old and present days. People can observe the manners and patterns of city life in different areas and people also can talk with different kinds of human beings who live in different ages and places. This is the function of communication. While reaching all those biographical works, we receipt wit, emotional feeling and experience. This is the meaning of function of education. In the biographical works, readers will communicate with all the figures, so, firstly, we should focus on these figures. In biographies, the main figures are the biographees, which are the main targets for writing. Human being is the center and life for biographical creation. So, the most important element for biography is reproducing the complicated personality of human being in production to show the two aspects of true life. Biographees carry the every aspect of life, their desire, feeling, pain, happiness and achievement and the meaning of life, when we are reading such kinds of biographical works, we are talking about these great images, we are sharing the pain, happiness, feeling and achievement with them, in order to enhance the empathy of our life. In this aspect, biographical works are just used as a channel for communication between all of us.
The biographer leads us to the world of the great men. He lets us have a look at these men’s families, their schools, their childhood and the biographers also invite us to understand their life, love, hardship and their honors. Biographers just make us feel that we are staying with the biographees, make us feel that we are working, crying and laughing with them. If the biographer really does a great job to create a great biography to show the life of the great men, then the readers just like living with the great men. Knowing and admiring the great men is a good experience of education.
3. 3 The spiritual value of biography
What’s more, when we are talking about the value of literature, we always mention its moral value; some people have argued that reading fine literature improves us morally. In particular, fictions and poetries are supposed to enhance our empathy and make us more humane. There is a place where we are always alone with our own mortality, where we must simply have something greater than ourselves to hold onto - God or history or politics or literature or a belief in the healing power of love, or even righteous anger[10]. When we attribute inspirational value to works of literature, we mean that these works make people think there is more to this life than they ever imagined. This sort of effect is more often produced by literature.
In a broad sense, moral value of biography is only a part of literature spiritual value. Spiritual value is the true value of literature works[11]. Just as there are many different stories happening in our life, there are many different figures in literary world, which extracted from this seething world. These figures are just the special typical ones, in which we can find many common things when compared with ourselves. We verify our own spiritual value from all these images. Those very grasping gentry, those timid crowds, those patriotic heroes, those intelligent and wise men are all reflections on our own heart. From these reflections, we examine ourselves, and in this way we gain the essence of life. The other spiritual value of literature is that literary works will purify our heart, enrich her and let her free. Just like when reading the poetry and wonderful essay; we gain peaceful feeling from the scenic picture they create; we are also moved by their eloquent and persuasive statement; we feel happy when we get close to the nature world in literary works. All such special experience we get of course will enrich our heart and finally cultivate a plot filled with freedom for our inner-self. What the author mentioned above are the value of literature, and all the statements of its value are just as a key to open the door of the world of biographical literature art.
In any states of life, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the endless appetite of the true meaning of life and the joy of the game of living. In the center of our heart there is a world full of sadness, pain, bewailed feeling and happiness. This is a world filled with deep thought about many contradictory conditions. Human beings are longing for studying other individual life around us. We want to analyze their life, their contradictory mentality and in this way we hope to find ways to lead us come out from the hard period of our own life. Then we might know ourselves more clearly. We receive messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage, knowledge, power and wits from biography to enhance our empties, to satisfy our emotional and spiritual needs. We need go to other individual life to search for the meaning of life, to verify ourselves. This is the spiritual value of literature and it is also the spiritual value of biography.
