Conclusion
In short, this paper focuses mainly on analysis of the figure of Becky Sharp in the masterpiece Vanity Fair. After summarizing the previous research and achievement on the figure and analyzing the social background and personal experience of Thackeray, the writer has come to the conclusion and given a new view on Becky.
In this paper, the writer has illustrated the characters of Becky which have left in the readers’ mind. There are main six kinds: inclination to seek fame and fortune, sophistication and ill mentality, ability to please everyone, selfishness, unscrupulous hypocrisy and artificiality, indifference and irresponsibility. All of them are negative and one-sided. Then the writer lists some factors influenced the characters of Becky including the social background, the personal experiences of Thackeray. All those factors limited the shaping of the figure. In the end, the writer pointed out that there are positive views on the figure. Generally speaking, there are mainly two aspects: on one hand, she is a character of tragedy and deserving pity. She has a miserable life and bears social condemnation and does not enjoy family love. On the other hand, she is a character of an admirable hero. She has a definite goal in mind, makes good use of her talent and other condition and makes success in the end.
Limited to the depth of this research, this paper leaves a problem for future study. What is the attitude of Thackeray to Becky? It is too dogmatic to get the conclusion that he holds a totally negative view on the figure. The research on the attitude of Thackeray is very important for the readers to understand the whole novel well and truly.
