3.2.2 Utilization of personal talent
After the determination of goal of fighting against the society, Becky had planned some means to establishing herself in the society. One of the indirect means is taking good advantage of the female to ingratiate male.
First of all, she made better use of female nature to obtain love from male and achieved the purpose of domination to man because of her smart. Less than a year’ time since she came to the Queen’s Rockery, she had become the only confidant of the host. As for Rawdon, the Baroness’s son, in high favor with his rich aunt, the sole heir to the property in the future, she left him at large in order to apprehend him afterwards and pretended to be a lady in an educated manner. Rawdon desperately fell in love with her. In spite of the result of the loss of inheritance rights, he still thought that he had never been so happy. After she recognized Sir Steyne who was infatuated with her, she asked him to pay her debt and give her husband an ideal job. Her careful service to Jos was only to get his property which had come into being in the end. But she was not immoral and always loved her husband with no chaos in sex. She always took the female advantages in a limited area. As a result, the men who were under temptation to her had to admit that she was innocent, wise and pure. The big fish to her, Sir Steyne thought he was taken in because he had not received her body. So she did not depend on men but fighted against the male-centered society in a special way with the support of male and there was almost no male condemned what she had done.
Secondly she had the same courage with men and self-esteem to get a chance of success. In Rousseau’ view, the natural order also stipulates that women should be subordinate to men. The ties between a family and society could be realized through parents who could decide the social status of the family. In the novel, Becky was more enterprising, courageous, and independent than men. In her family, she was the real host. When Becky got the news that Rawdon had no inheritance, she said that “let me help you earn a family”. The social status of the family could be lifted under the effort of Becky. Actually she had achieved her promise. In the war, she did not rely on her husband but used the war to get rich. She also went London alone to clean up her husband’ claims and sought an opportunity to have an audience with emperor and raised the social status of the family. She took everything into consideration including her husband, his fame, his property, his status and so on. She was not afraid of failure and always optimistic to the next goal. In Vanity Fair, she was outstanding. Compared with the contemporary female, her friend Amelia who was relying on and enjoying the love of Dobbin with no return was a parasite.
Thirdly, in order to achieve her objectives, she could endure humiliation and please the others, which was not an easy behavior for the lady from a petty bourgeoisie family in the 19th century British. Becky’s fighting manner was offensive and active. She had a strong sense of self-esteem. When she was in school, she never tolerated anything and had constant provocation and an ostentatious display of ability. While after she left school, she changed the way of resistance. Becky was capable and interesting and not only could be able to seize men’s heart and weakness, which made the helpful men do everything for her, but also could meet the favor of women. As a teacher in the Crowley, she was consistent with politeness and conquered old lady with large amount of money in a short period of time and she was almost the hostess when the host was not at home. The girl who was the troublemaker at school had turned into a person who was honest, kind, passionate, easygoing and not angry no matter what you did. Even the old lady who did not believe anybody intended to give great benefit to her in private. Of course, the shift of her struggling methods was to achieve her ambitious goal which consolidated her position in the family and made the old lady accept her as one of heirs. Facing interest, she deeply knew the society well and also realized that the old lady just took her as a toy. But in order to get the property, she pretended to be gentle and kind-hearted and carried coal. Nothing could change her determination of becoming a first-class people. The author did not make any changes in her psychological description which meant that he also approval led her change.
Fourthly, she invented a fabricated origin because the lack of affection. As what had been mentioned above, money was the only standard and norm of the morality. As a female in such a circumstance, she had no other ways. The other girl from the rich family was a lady by birth. But she could not change her origin. So she made up a story which had deceived many people and helped her climbing up. She did not hurt anybody and that was just an irony to the upper classes. In Vanity Fair, Becky keeping in line with the time and dealing the good relationship with all kinds of people opened the door to the high society on her own. She was a pioneer of the era. Her offensive means could not be supported totally, while it could not be denied. The author said that Becky was as innocent as the other men and women in the novel.
