Introduction
Since the Industrial Revolution in the second half of the 18th century, the class structure in English society had undergone radical changes. The industrial capitalists began to play a more important role and vied for political power with the old aristocracy. Due to the support of the people, this struggle for power ended in the victory of the bourgeoisie over the aristocracy. With the development of capitalism there rose a powerful working class, though the conflict between labor and capita was for some time the background of the struggle between the feudal and the bourgeois classes. But from the thirties of the 19th century, the struggle between the workers and capitalists became the fundamental contradiction in English social life. As for ethics, the upper middle class tried to create an impression that women should be a good wife, a good mother and angel of family. They should create a modest parent-child relationship. But in fact the gender inequalities were reflected in every corner of life. Some educated women were not willing to yield to the reality and tried to struggle for the freedom of women. Under this social condition, there appeared a literary trend of critical realism. English critical realism flourished in the forties and early fifties. The critical realists described the English society vividly. They criticized the life of the bourgeoisie and showed the misery and suffering of the common people. They gave a satirical portrayal of the former and expressed profound sympathy for the latter. William Makepeace Thackeray was one of the representatives.
