Conclusion
In this paper, the author sets his sight on the study of the Iceberg Theory in Hemingway's literature creation, especially in his last novel named The Old Man and the Sea. The Iceberg Theory can be identified like this: the author describe his ideas in some simple words or sentences. The deep-seated and implied meanings are left to be considered by readers through those expressed words or sentences. In other words, it is like the iceberg that floating on the sea is the one-eighth of his thoughts, the other seven-eighths on the seabed is his implied meanings. Simplicity and symbolism are the two basic elements of iceberg theory. So in this paper, the author discusses these two elements in details. Simplicity is one feature of language; it requires that any unwanted words or sentences should not appear in the novel. Symbolism appears on the base of simple writing, and it’s emphases is to open out the imply meaning by concrete things. At the same time, the paper also introduced the influence of the Iceberg Theory on Hemingway's literature career and the whole American literature. After this theory being created, Hemingway used it in all his novels. No doubt, it became more and more perfect when practiced frequently. So The Old Man and the Sea helped him to be the winner of the Nobel Prize. Of course, this is a great contribution to the whole American literature. As one of the best American novelists, short-story writers, Hemingway achieved a rare cult-like popularity during his lifetime. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. Beyond all doubt, whose deceptively simple prose style have influenced wide range of writers and made great influence to the American literature. He took Americans around the world with his new style of fiction, and he took fiction to new levels of pop culture status. Many of his works are now considered canonical in American literature.
In a word, this paper helps readers understand and appreciate this writing style. It is of great significance to the study of Hemingway’s writing style.
