Although the cult old true womanhood still had a lasting influence in the early twentieth century, yet the women’s movements has brought new ideas to the public and they found their expression in the literature at that time. As a sensitive writer to the social changes, Fitzgerald is always the spokesman of his age. He can not totally keep blind to the changes happened to the American middle class woman. Therefore, his woman more or less displays some difference compared with traditional housewives. These differences are mainly reflected in their ideas about marriage, in their attitude towards men and in their attempt to pursue a career. Woman are faced with the social pressure and they are put in the difficult situation, so as to call forth more understanding for them.
3. 1 Nick’s discrimination to Jordan
In the movements of women, there is a new concept—new woman. and one of the characters in the novel named Jordan is the new woman. Jordan nearly falls in love with Nick, yet her feeling comes to nothing, cause Nick has discrimination to Jordan, to some extent, to the new woman. this new woman can have a college education; can find a job to support herself; can drive with her car to have fun far away from home. The new woman has taken a new appearance absolutely different from the traditional one. But she would be faced with much heavier social pressure than before. Working opportunities and changing social values brought many women economic independence and more freedom in their selection of a husband. Yet they had to face problems such as fewer working chances than man, and lower payment than man even they were doing the same job. What’s more important, she would be considered to play with men in the courtship and people would question their innocence and femininities, which is her difficulty in finding her true love. This is the reason why Jordan can not gain Nick’s love. So to speak, in this aspect, Nick does not take a positive view to treat Jordan, his function in interpreting the role of Jordan is a counter-function, having the negative meaning to female interpretation.
3. 2 Nick’s misunderstanding to Daisy
Nick is the cousin of Daisy, yet he is not familiar with her at the very beginning. However, in the end ,he consider that Daisy is the totally false women, and to the great extent, he plays the blame on the Daisy. As the spokesman of Fitzgerald, his attitude is controversy.
Daisy in the novel is the “golden girls”[10]from upper-class, who are expected to be the “angel in the house”[10]. But in the male critic’s eyes. She is “vamp” or “dress-turned bitch”[10], who depletes the hero’s genius and emotions, and directly and indirectly causes the crack up of the heroes. Viewed from a feminist perspective, in fact, Daisy is a victim of the culture. She is passively and deeply involved in the network of men’s desires and can not find the way to liberate herself from men’s control. She actually is a traditional married woman who is totally confined to restraints of marriage and all her happiness is based on the favor of her husband. Her choice and actions generally result from her fear of the loss of the economic security as well as the social security promised by the family and the husband. She is once an innocent girl who believe happy marriage, her love to Gatsby and Tom both is true. As a girl, she once wants to run away with Gatsby when he is a poorest soldier with nothing but love, but her parents prevent this escape. Moreover, on the day of her marriage with Tom, she is found drunk in her room and is crying, with a letter in her hand written to Gatsby. Her love to Gatsby is evident and she also wishes to pursue love freely. But it is also a fact that she really falls in love with Tom after their marriage. As Jordan said: “I’d never seen a girl so mad about her husband, if he left the room for a minute she will look around uneasily, and say: ‘where’s Tom gone?” and wear the most abstracted expression until she saw him coming in the door.”[1]due to the reason, no one can deny Daisy’s love for two men and it is not convincing to say that Daisy is the girl whose “voice full of money”[1]—which is the comment giving by Nick.
In fact, Nick dose not take the deep perspective to understand the female, his point of view in woman is companying with bias. as a matter of fact, it is still the case with women in the present society, women’s living status calls for more public attention. As long as women’s living condition and social status are improved , the harmonious relationship can be established between the two sexes.
Conclusion
Throughout the whole thesis, the function of Nick Carraway in the Great Gatsby from the aspects of novel structure , themes, point of view in narration and female interpretation is analyzed. As the first-person narrator, it is through Carraway’s eyes that we can see the other characters and the world they lived in. Carraway is the only character in the novel to exhibit, and hold onto, a sense of morals and decency throughout the novel. This paper shows the Fitzgerald’s mastery of writing technique in arrangement, especially Nick, the significant role, in such elaborate ways. Have been analyzed the novel in the point of view from the function of Nick, the paper also shows that the Fitzgerald’s writing is smooth, sensitive, and completely original in its diction, simplicity and gracefulness. In short, it conveys the vision of the author and reveals Fitzgerald’s consummate artistry.
