We go through the strong pass with wind–frozen red flags.
(2) Wind flutters the red flag as we march through the strong pass.(Tr. 1963)
(3) The wind unfurls the red flags,
As they climb over the mountain pass. (Tr. 1965)
(4) As we climb the pass,
The wind plays open our red banners. (Tr. August 1972)
(5) red flags, whirled by the wind,
go through the great pass. (Tr. August 1972)
(6) We cross the great pass, red flags waving in the wind. (Tr. 1976)
(7) And, red flags flapping in the wind,
Through the great pass we go. (Tr. 1978)
(8) We press ahead through the great pass,
The whirlwind flopping the red flags. (Tr. 1980)
The first version which describes the Red Army marching in snow with red flags frozen in the wind shows through what hardship and with what courage the soldiers were fighting, but the other versions which give a picture of red flags floating or flying in the wind by using “flutter, unfurl, play open, whirl, wave, flap, flop” are mistranslations.[4]
3. 2. 4 Under–translation
However, translators should not omit images and words at will while translating, especially when they are very important, necessary and closely related to the original meaning. If this happens, translators will not only fail to express the original meaning but also could not let target language readers to comprehend the original thought and feelings completely. For example:

忆往昔峥嵘岁月稠 (《沁园春•长沙》)
        (1) How thick with salient days those bygone times appear! (Changsha)
        (2) Vivid yet those crowed moths and years. (idid) [4]
Readers can see the first version is faithful to the original, then the second is underdone. Here “thick” is translated into “crowed”, but the image of “salient days” is not translated. The under–translation does not resemble the original in sense, so it can not be so beautiful as the original.
As a whole, literal translation, shift translation, amplification and omission are four different way in translation. An excellent translation includes these four kinds of translation. When translaors translate Mao Tse-tung’s poetry they should use these four kinds of way properly and proficiently in order to convey the beauty of images in Mao Tse-tung’s poetry.

4  Standards for the translation of Mao Tse-tung’s poetry
Hu Shi, who is a famous writer and translator in China, once said: “A translator should be responsible for the original author. The author writes an excellent poem, it must be translated excellently as well. An excellent translation should make readers feel pleased after reading”. [10] It requires the translator to represent the original level faithfully so as to bring sympathize between the author and readers and enjoy the original beauty. It is an attitude responsible for translation and is the basic principle guiding our translation. According to this, While Mao Tse-tung’s poetry is rendered into English one, the translation of its images should be based on three standards.
4. 1 Faithfulness
Faithfulness refers to the accuracy in translation. That is to say, the translator should transmit the original meaning and form faithfully. It is the basic requirement for translation. The translation will lose its base and significance without according to the standard of faithfulness. If readers have read a version whose thought is quite different from that of the original, the translator not only failed to build a bridge between the original author and readers, but also distorted the original work and misled readers. It is absolutely a kind of guilt. As it known to all, the beauty in poetry is based on the beauty in images. The translation of poetry should transmit the beauty in images as much as possible. Furthermore, it should express the cultural essence of a certain country and nation completely to achieve the goal of cultural communication. For example:

指点江山,
激扬文字,
粪土当年万户侯。(《沁园春•长沙》)
We criticized the state affairs then,
With vigorous strokes of the pen,转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
