Introduction
Huckleberry Fin was created in the 19th century which costs Mark Twain 8 years. As soon as it was published, it became popular reading matter. Sparking with dangers, jumping with youthful adventures, Huckleberry Finn is one of the most splendid recreations of childhood in all of literature. Huck is one of the several great adolescent heroes in American fiction. His rebellion, honest and courage as well as initiative spirit are the typical character of Americans. The process of his adventures is not only an active painting along the Mississippi River, but also shows what is actually happening around that period. It is more than a boys’ book which has its greatness to be read and admired on all age levels. Literary giant Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes (from the book).”[1]
While Oliver Twist written in 19th century by Dickens gives us another child image of that period. Oliver is a kind but too naïve orphan. Although he was born in chaos and unstable society, he keeps his pure nature all the time and finally receives what he deserved. The important thing about the novel is it disclosed the oppressed of the social system and the institutions responsible for such social evils. Max praised writers in the period of time because their “graphic and eloquent descriptions have revealed more political and social truths of the world than have all the politicians, publicists and moralists added together.”[2]

The paper intends to do some comparisons about major children images of these two novels. It is divided into two main parts. The first part mainly discussing the similarities of those two children images: similar living condition, similar experience of writers that be reflected through two children. Differences are the main topic of the second part, including different personalities of two boys and the forming reasons, different language style of two boys and different influence of major sub-characters on the children. Through some analysis, the paper concludes that the formation of Huck and Oliver’s different personalities are different.
1 Similarities between children images
Compare these two works, we can easily found that they have some aspects in common. Firstly, both the two kids come from the bottom of society, that is to say, they undergoes similar living condition. Then, both of the authors had an unfortunate childhood that forced them to earn bread when they were very young. All those experience left them great impression, thus they reappeared them by these two boys.

1. 1 Similar living condition of two boys
The starting point of two protagonists is similar----they wanted a freer or better life for their own. They couldn’t stand the rules and restrictions that civilized society gave them. Children’s nature was inhibited cruelly. Their journey of adventures was a process of revealing weaknesses of social system, a process reflecting writers’ will and satire, a process deepen the themes.
Secondly, the journey was full of difficulties, misunderstandings and lots of potential dangers, which slow down or hindered or even stopped the traveling of characters, but in the end, the protagonists relied on their unique method and characteristics come over everything unfortunate. The journey symbols their growth and mature. The last but not least is the rest of the characters who also play an important part of promoting the development of the stories.
In a word, the commonest feature of these two children is the living condition they experienced. In other words, the situations at home and abroad were not stable. The fights and conflicts between capitalism and feudalism were extremely sharp and fierce. Common people lived a worse life than ever before. High unemployment, deteriorating environment and many people couldn’t hold a family. Due to the unequal policies of politics and economy, people became destitute and homeless. Huck and Oliver are representatives of people in such case. 转贴于 酷文网-论文下载中心 http://www.coolwen.net
